KCE finalist in Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards

Local electricity generator and retailer, King Country Energy (KCE), has been named a finalist in the prestigious 2016 Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards for its Waikato-based 'Tree of Light' initiative.

KCE is one of four companies in New Zealand spanning the electricity, oil, gas and petroleum industries to this week be selected as a finalist in the annual Awards' 'Community Initiative of the Year' category.

The category was open earlier this year to New Zealand energy sector organisations undertaking an initiative that demonstrates wide reaching benefits to both the organisation and community involved.

KCE's community relations manager, Helen Peacock, said the KCE Tree of Light is a "truly one-of-a-kind community initiative established by KCE for the people of the Waitomo District."

"The purpose of the Tree, located on Te Kuiti's Rora Street, is to promote hundreds – even thousands - of worthy causes that any member of the Waitomo community deems in need of profile.

"As time goes on, it might be red for ANZAC Day, yellow for Daffodil Day or green for Conservation Week. A different occasion or event; a different colour: with each and every
occasion and event carefully hand-picked by passionate local residents and community
groups."

The Tree was launched in December 2015 at an event attended by thousands of community members. Since launch day, it has stood glowing in different colours for special occasions and awareness events dear to the hearts of local people.

KCE has operated in the Waitomo area for 16 years and just under half of the company's entire customer database resides there.

"As a relatively small company compared to most finalists, we are thrilled to have made such a strong impression in the Waitomo community, and in the electricity, oil, gas and petroleum industries."

"It's an honour to be recognised by the Awards, alongside Powerco, PowerNet, and Shell New Zealand, as undertaking one of the best community projects in the country.

KCE was also a finalist in the Awards' 'Energy Project of the Year' category last year, and in the Retailer of the Year category in 2013.

2016 will be the seventh year of the Deloitte Energy Excellence Awards, which recognise excellence and achievement across the aforementioned industries. Awards' winners will be announced at a black tie event on Wednesday 10 August at SkyCity in Auckland.

KCE is the King Country's leading electricity retailer and generator. Its head office is in Taumarunui and electricity generation is undertaken at five sites: Kuratau, Mokauiti, Piriaka and Wairere power stations in the King Country, plus Mangahao power station near Shannon.
