Public invited to join David Tua, Liam Messam and other celebrities for women’s refuge fundraiser

Waikato Women's Refuge invites the community to a special night out at Turangawaewae Marae on Thursday 26 February.

Service Manager Roni Albert, says, "It's not too late to book in for this fun night out. It's a special opportunity to be welcomed on to the Turangawaewae Marae and share the evening with a few of New Zealand's sporting heroes and celebrities.

"This is our refuge's major fundraiser for the year and we need a full house to make it a success."

Waikato Women's Refuge is a union of both the Te Whakaruruhau Maori Women's Refuge and Hamilton Refuge and Support Services. It operates safe houses and domestic violence support services for women of all ethnic backgrounds who come from throughout the region to receive help in Hamilton city. The refuge currently supports 54 women and children in six safe houses.

"We receive around 54% of our funding through the government and rely on fundraisers, donations and grants for the remainder. Our operational budget is around $1.9 million per year," explains Ms Albert.

The $100-a-plate fundraiser includes a Maori fusion feast prepared by celebrity chef and star of the TV show, Kai Ora, Anne Thorpe.

Sporting greats David Tua, Liam Messam and a few of his All Black teammates plus Jenny May Coffin will participate in the evening's entertainment.

Members of the award-winning Kapa Haka group, Te Pou o Mangatawhiri, will perform.

Women's refuge ambassador and award-winning singer Tina Cross will perform her original song, 'Walk Away,' which she released in 2014 in an effort to raise funds for all women's refuges in New Zealand.

Wine, beer and cider donated by Hamilton pub, Good George, will be served on the night.

Individual tickets and tables of 10 can be purchased until 25 February by emailing or phoning event organiser Deborah on 07 889 4053 ext 202.
