Hill Laboratories to centralise Hamilton operations at new city location

New Zealand's leading analytical testing lab, Hill Laboratories, has announced that staff from all four of its Hamilton sites will soon consolidate in one city location.

In approximately one year's time, the company's 300 Hamilton-based employees will begin to occupy what was formerly a New Zealand Post building on Duke Street in Frankton.

The move will include all employees from Hill Laboratories' Hamilton sites in Clyde Street, Te Aroha Street, Clow Place and Waikato Innovation Park, and is expected to be complete by the end of 2017.

Hill Laboratories CEO, Dr Matt Glenn, said the move is an outcome of the company's sustained growth in both revenue and staff numbers.

"Within the past five years alone Hill Laboratories has experienced 33 percent revenue growth and 22 percent increase in staff numbers. As we continue to grow it is fitting that we consolidate staff and resources into one central location," he said.

Dr Glenn said Frankton, a more industrial area, is better suited to the nature of Hill Laboratories work than any of the company's current premises.

"We are excited to relocate to the growing suburb of Frankton. The Duke Street building is in a more industrial area with excellent connections to major roading networks and couriers; yet conveniently for staff it's only a few minutes' drive from the CBD. We believe this location is a win-win for all our stakeholders."

Dr Glenn said the choice of new location cements the company's commitment to Hamilton.

"Hill Laboratories has been in Hamilton for an impressive 32 years. Our roots are here, it is our home, and our new choice of location demonstrates our commitment to the city," he said.

The Duke Street building is owned by Hamilton-based property company KGL Property, who will lease it to Hill Laboratories once developed. KGL Property has also purchased Hill Laboratories' current Head Office on Clyde St effective 1 July 2016.

"With the sale of our Clyde Street building to KGL Property, we are confident our move will be a positive one for Hamilton East in the long-term.

"For a long time Hill Laboratories has been the only large industrial company in the Grey Street precinct. We look forward to eventually seeing KGL redevelop and modernise the site with a development that better suits the unique surrounding community," said Dr Glenn.

Over the next 12 months Hill Laboratories will make a $15 million investment to fully renovate the Duke Street building. NZ Post will leave the Duke Street building at the end of June 2016 and renovations will begin early July 2016.

"This sizeable investment demonstrates our confidence in the future of Hill Laboratories," he said.

"We are renovating the building to be fit for purpose. It includes 7000 square metres of laboratory space - that's the size of a rugby field, and it's large-enough to accommodate future growth."

Hill Laboratories is a 100 per cent privately owned New Zealand analytical testing laboratory and has three major testing areas: Agriculture, Environmental and Food.

The company was founded by Roger and Anne Hill more than three decades ago. Today the company is well-known nationally and internationally as the largest privately owned testing laboratory in the whole of New Zealand.

As well as its Hamilton sites, Hill Laboratories has labs in Christchurch, Blenheim and Auckland.
