Vouchers may be provided to a business where the Growth Advisors have identified a need for management training as part of an action plan to support the business owner to grow and innovate their business.

Communications Training

Communications Action Plan – Beginner (RBP)

For any business to achieve its business goals, it must communicate well with many different audiences – from staff to customers to its community.  By the end of this training course, your business will have a complete communications action plan in place. 

This training is appropriate to learn how to develop a general business communications plan or an action plan related to a specific event or milestone in your business. 

Through a series of four two-hour sessions, our Director will take you through how to develop an action plan by covering: 

  • Aligning your communications goals to business goals 
  • What research to undertake before you get started 
  • Developing SMART objectives 
  • Developing and communicating your key messages 
  • Measuring communications impact 
  • Understanding your target audiences 
  • Determining the best strategic approach

We will provide you with a range of templates and guidelines to help you during the training and beyond.

Podcasting to Newsletters – Picking the Right Communications Channels for your Business (RBP)

During this two-hour coaching session, we’ll start out by discussing what your business wants to achieve and the communications channels you are currently using.

We will then coach you through a Keep-Stop-Start discussion of what channels you should ditch, keep or start doing.

Training - Media Communications

HMC offers media training for individuals and groups in a range of formats.  We can give you a quick session just prior to a media interview, or we can arrange for an intense multi-day training workshop.  

We offer:

  • 90-120 minute ‘top tips’ session for groups covering traditional and social media tips and including exercises
  • Half-day, one-day and two-day intense workshops including mock interviews and video recording/feedback sessions


Media Interview Training – One on One Coaching (RBP)

Through a one-on-one coaching session (in person or via videoconference), our senior advisor will help you understand how best to work with media and will walk you through the best way to answer journalist’s questions during interviews.

This is not a full-blown media training session, but meant as a refresher and great for people preparing for actual interviews coming up in the near future.

Crisis Training

Communication Plan for Uncertain Times (RBP)

During uncertain times, it’s important to keep communications channels open and transparent – whether that be with your staff, customers or community.  But when you are working under stress and uncertainty, this can be difficult to do.

During this four hour training session, over two two-hour session we will use a specific example from your business to train you how to develop a communications ‘response’ to the risk you are facing.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Craft simple, sensitive messaging
  • Determine the audiences you must communicate with
  • Develop a timeline of communication
  • Determine the communications objectives during this time
  • Measure your impact and communications success
  • Determine the right communications channels and tactics to use during uncertain times

Plus, throughout the training, we will cover lots of general dos and don’ts for communicating during uncertain times.

This training is appropriate for organisation who need to make a major negative announcement, deal with redundancies, announce a company takeover or merger or deal with a negative issue that’s likely to hit the media.

Crisis Communication Group Training (RBP)

The importance of understanding, maintaining and enhancing reputation cannot be overstated in today’s world. Organisations need to know how social media and media, relationships, staff actions and much more can impact on a crisis - and how to communicate through that.

Our senior advisor(s) will work with business owners and their leadership teams to train them in how to plan for communicating effectively in a crisis.

The planning takes place over three sessions:

Session One - State of the Nation

What: Professional development/training session providing an overview of the current state of crisis communications and reputation management, and the changing media landscape and impact of social media on crisis and reputation management. 

How long: 90 minutes, including Q and A time.
Who: Board members, senior leaders, key line managers. Up to 10 people.

Session Two – Reputation and champions and detractors

What: Professional development/training session on the importance of stakeholder and community engagement, reputation management, and banking goodwill. Also, the importance and impact of staff and volunteers to your brand.

How long: 90 minutes including Q and A time.
Who: Board members, senior leaders, key line managers. Up to 10 people.

Session Three - Desktop exercise

What: Desktop exercise for a crisis/reputational management situation with a focus on reputational response. Scenario presented by HMC to test responses, crisis roles, instincts and thinking. No operational response needed. Assessment to include recommendation if intensive media training or full crisis simulation exercise is required.

How long: 120 minutes including verbal debrief; summary of recommendations sent following training.
Who: Senior leaders, key line managers. Up to 10 people.

In this jam-packed three-hour, one-on-one video training session, you’ll learn how to leverage the power of Facebook and Instagram advertising for your business without having to rely on the infamous ‘’boost’’ button, which never yields the best results.
