Grandma's Snickerdoodles

Heather Claycomb

Snickerdoodles are a common American cookie baked at Christmastime in Amish and Mennonite communities, from which Heather’s paternal grandparents and family originated in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. My grandma baked dozens of Christmas cookies throughout the month of December and these were always my favourite.

Ingredients

1 cup butter
1.5 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ¾ cups flour
2 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp baking soda
¼ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
¼ tsp nutmeg
2 T sugar
2 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Mix the butter, 1.5 cups sugar, vanilla and eggs thoroughly.  Blend in dry ingredients.
  2. Shape dough into teaspoon-sized balls and roll them into a mixture of the 2Tsugar/2t cinnamon.
  3. Place the balls onto a baking tray approx. 4cm apart.
  4. Bake 8-10 mins until set in 180C oven.  Remove immediately from baking tray and cool on cookie rack.  Makes a few dozen, depending on size.
